Trapani Shark

Trapani Shark is a professional basketball club from Trapani, Sicily. Established in 2023, it took over from the earlier Pallacanestro Trapani. The squad plays its home matches at PalaShark (also known as PalaTrapani). In their debut year, they defeated Cantù to claim the Supercoppa LNP.

The roots of basketball in Trapani stretch back to the 1930s, when youth organizations like the Fascist Youth Combat Groups (1930–1937) and the Italian Youth of the Lictor (1937–1943) first fielded teams in regional competitions under the fascist regime. The earliest recorded game in the city occurred in 1934, when the local F.G.C. side faced a team from Castellammare del Golfo. That same June, a regional championship saw Trapani compete against clubs from Catania and Agrigento. In 1935, the F.G.C. Trapani entered the "Palermo Tournament," possibly an early version of the Second Division, alongside teams from Catania, Enna, Caltanissetta, Agrigento, Syracuse, Messina, and Palermo.

After the F.G.C. merged into the G.I.L. in 1937, the latter organized the 15th Sicily Group of the GIL First Division in 1938, with Trapani playing against Catania, Agrigento, Enna, and Caltanissetta. By the early 1940s, young athletes from the GIL had joined the Trapani G.U.F. (Fascist University Group), which competed in Group IV of the 1941–1942 Serie B alongside G.U.F. Palermo and G.U.F. Messina. Notable multi-sport athletes from this era included Umberto Saura (1915–2000), a pole vaulter and footballer for Juventus Trapani, as well as Alberto Corso, Gaetano Sabato, Antonino Ferlito, Rocco Cernigliaro, and Paolo Calafiore. Former GIL and GUF members such as Bartolomeo Sorrentino, Alberto Cardella, Pino Cardella, and Osvaldo La Cavera later moved into coaching and administration, building on these foundations.

After the war, teams emerged from associations and public or independent bodies. Libertas Trapani, active in the 1940s, took part in regional championships aiming for the 1945–46 Serie A. It was a local branch of the post-war Libertas National Sports Center. Corda Fratres Trapani, a revived branch of the International Student Federation, played in local and regional tournaments before merging, under Girolamo "Mommo" Marchello, into the Trapani Basketball Association, which lasted until 1953 when it joined Enal Trapani.
