Olimpia Cagliari is an amateur basketball club from Cagliari, Sardinia. Its greatest fame comes from the 1970s, when it competed in the top-tier Serie A under the name Brill Cagliari.
The club was founded on 23 February 1953 by a group of young players, led by Bebi Mosca and including brothers Antonio and Carlo Pirastu, who broke away from Gruppo Sportivo Aquila (the city’s oldest basketball team, founded in 1944). In the following years, its numbers grew with players from Esperia Cagliari, a club that later became a fierce rival. Starting in regional leagues, Olimpia reached the second-division Serie B in 1965. During the late 1960s, it began a collaboration with football club Unione Sportiva Cagliari and changed its name to Unione Sportiva Pallacanestro Cagliari.
In the 1968–69 promotion playoffs, Cagliari beat Libertas Brindisi 62–56 in Naples to earn a spot in Serie A. Renamed Brill Cagliari after a shoe-shine sponsor, and now playing at the new PalaRockefeller arena, the team struggled in its first top-flight season. It won only three games in 1969–70 and was immediately relegated, securing its third win on 12 April 1970 against Virtus Bologna, the same day the U.S. Cagliari football team won its league. The club returned to Serie A in 1972 by beating Sapori Siena after two overtimes for promotion. On 4 March 1973, Cagliari defeated reigning European and Intercontinental champions Ignis Varese 76–75, thanks to Mario Vascellari’s last-minute block on Paolo Polzot, which helped the team avoid relegation that season. Led by American John Sutter, Brill upset major teams like Simmenthal Milano, Forst Cantù, and Varese at home over the following seasons. The club played six straight seasons in Serie A, its best finish being fifth place in 1976–77.
Cagliari lost the relegation play-outs against Mecap Vigevano at the end of the 1977–78 season and dropped to the second division (now Serie A2). Brill ended its sponsorship, and a Sutter-coached team finished thirteenth out of fourteen the next season. After finishing last in 1979–80 with only eight points, the club was relegated to Serie B. That same year, its parent organization folded due to financial troubles. A series of name and ownership changes followed, with the club surviving only through mergers.
