Fortitudo Pallacanestro Bologna 103, also called Fortitudo Bologna and, for sponsorship reasons, Fortitudo Flats Service Bologna, is a basketball team from Bologna, Italy. It currently competes in the country’s second division. For most of its existence, the club has been the lesser rival in its own city, playing in the shadow of Virtus Bologna in the heated Bologna Derby. Fortitudo’s first major trophy came in 1998 with the Italian Cup. The team then won the Italian League twice, first in 2000 and again in 2005.
Between 1997 and 2006, Fortitudo reached the Italian league finals ten years in a row. After losing the first three finals, they secured their first Serie A title in 2000. Four more finals losses followed before they won their second league championship in 2005, beating Armani Jeans Milano 3–1 in the finals. That series ended when a buzzer-beater by Ruben Douglas in Game 4 was upheld after an instant replay review.
In European play, Fortitudo became a regular in the top-tier Euroleague. Their first European achievement was reaching the FIBA Korać Cup final in 1977, though they had participated in earlier seasons of that competition; they ultimately lost to Jugoplastika. They made the Euroleague Final Four in 2004, losing in the semifinal to Maccabi Tel Aviv and then falling to CSKA Moscow in the third-place game. In 2001, they reached the Euroleague playoff semifinals, eliminated by Virtus. During the 2006–07 season, Fortitudo went through three different coaches and finished 13th out of 18 teams, though they still qualified for the 2007–08 ULEB Cup.
After being relegated from the top flight following the 2008–09 season, Fortitudo was barred from playing in Serie A2 due to financial irregularities. The team had to restart in the Serie A dilettanti. Even after winning that league, they were again excluded from Serie A2, and the Italian Federation revoked the club’s affiliation. This left Fortitudo unable to play in any league except youth competitions.
On June 18, 2013, a group of local businesspeople, professionals, and fans founded Fortitudo Pallacanestro Bologna 103 as the spiritual successor to the original club, keeping the same fan base, including the Fossa dei Leoni supporters’ group. Starting in the fourth-division DNB, they worked their way up to Serie A2 for the 2015–16 season.
