Dinamo Sassari was founded in 1960 and due to sponsorship deals has also been known as Banco Popolare Sassari (1989–90). In the 1994–95 Serie A2 regular season, the team scored 158 points against Pallacanestro Pavia (91) without overtimes, the highest score ever made in Italian professional league history (Serie A/A2). The club was promoted to Serie A in 2010 after beating Prima Veroli in the playoffs finals.

The 2013–14 season marked a historic breakthrough: Dinamo won the Italian Cup, its first trophy, with Travis Diener named Italian Cup MVP. Later that season, Drake Diener—Travis' cousin—was named Italian League MVP. The club also reached the EuroCup eight-finals. In 2014–15, Dinamo won its first Italian League championship, defeating Reggio Emilia 73–75 in Game 7 on the road. The team returned to the EuroLeague in 2015 but was eliminated in the regular season.

In 2018–19, Dinamo won the FIBA Europe Cup, its first European title, by defeating German side s.Oliver Würzburg in the second leg of the finals on 1 May 2019.
